Hello! I think I’m related possibly to some of you but I’m looking for confirmation, Ingeborg Jonsdatter Trefall is my ancestor who’s the daughter of Knut J Trefall! My great grandfather Anfin Olson Anderson who came to America was Married to Bertina Lee. I’m wondering if this means I’m a distant relative to anyone here!
Descendent of Lars Jakobson Ekse, b1849 of S Dakota. Daughter Nellie to son Halvor to daughter Helen (my grandmother). Born raised Portland, OR near Woodburn where the berry farm was. These pages are fascinating to me. Thanks for the effort
Hello! I am your cousin Beth from Washington. We visited at your cabin in 2012. That day was the best day of our trip. Thank you so much for your hospitality!
Artig å lesa alt ein kjem over frå Eksingedalen.
I was researching (Googling) my grandmother, Irene Johnson Njus (on my Dad, John Nelson Njus's side) when she appeared on the Trefall site, she was married to my grandfather, Joel Malchure Njus.
Her dad was Martin Johnson, but his parents aren't listed. However, her mother was Josephine Ekse, whose mother was Inger S0rem and father was Jakob Jakobsen Ekse, whose parents were Jakob Nilson Ekse & Ingebjorg Jakobsdotter Trefall, (whose dad was Nils Jonson Ekse.)
I was fascinated by Janice Johnson's legendary story, where she mentions Ingeborg "Emma" Jonsdotter Trefall.
I am wondering how Ingeborg Emma Jonsdotter Trefall is related to Ingebjorg Jakobsdotter Trefall.
I am also wondering if I am related to Janice Johnson through both my great grandmother and my great grandfather!
My children are Renzo, whose mom is Annie Alvarez, and Jade Ezra-Sung, whose mom is Kalli Sung.
Let me know if you have any further insight.
Thank you, Kaare.

I made a link on Ancestry above for you to look at a article in our local paper about the "Footprints in the snow" I mentioned in my previous guestbook entry. Also my Ancestry page is set for Public so if you'd like you can see my line. Look for "Janice Kluver" and my tree name is "Janice Lena Kluver Johnson" . It is still in progress however. But i do show the link to Trefall.
Greetings to my fellow relations. My name is Janice Kluver Johnson (1971). My strong ancestral lineage goes like this. My mothers name is Marilyn Ann Johnson Kluver. (1940) Marilyn's mother is Josephine Gecina Klegseth Johnson. (1910-1997) Josephine's mother is Karran Christina Johanneson Klegseth. (1877-1946) Karren's, know best as Christine, mother was Ingeborg Jonsdatter Trefall. Ingeborg was the eldest daughter of Jon Nilsson Eske (1822-1899) and Kari Ingebrigtsdatter Trefall (1827-1895). Ingeborg, who preferred to be called Emma, emigrated from Norway to the US on April 4, 1876 with Gullak Johanneson Begro and were married on December 5, 1876 in Minnesota then claimed their homstead in Revillo, South Dakota in 1877. They had 6 children thus many lines of their lineage survive today. I'd like to share a story that has been orally passed down from generation to generation in our families about a young, brave Trefall girl in the year 1349. The story goes like this. When the Black Death went through Norway in 1349 it killed 2/3 or more of the population and on many farms all died. The Government sent soldiers through the country to bury the dead. When they came to Trefall farm they thought all were dead. They buried them and just as they were leaving one person saw the small foot prints of a little child in the snow. What happened was that when the family became sick and when the mother was dying, there was only her 8 year old daughter left alive. So that she might live, she cut a hole in the center of a feather bed and told the girl since she would not be able to keep the fire going to only get out of the feather bed to go to the food house. Every farm had a separate place for food where they would have a whole winter's supply of dried and smoked fish, also beef, cheese, butter, stacks of flat bread and so on. So, if this 8 year old girl had not survived there would not have been no Grandmother Ingeborg Trefall and all of her descendants before her. I am happy to say that we, the many descendants of Ingeborg Jonsdatter Trefall and Gullak Johannessen Bergo are still surviving today and I am glad to share this tale with all of you. I do not know if this is a common story in other families? Ingeborg "Emma" Jonsdatter Trefall and Gullak Johannessen Bergo's families are still surviving and thriving in the Upper Midwest and Northern Regions of the U.S. today in Wisconsin, Minnesota North and South Dakota, even Nevada and California. This website is a treasure trove of familial information and I am glad to have found it. Thank you.

Hilsen til mine medforbindelser. Jeg heter Janice Kluver Johnson (1971). Min sterke forfedre går slik. Mors mors navn er Marilyn Ann Johnson Kluver.

I just found this site. Wonderful, so well done. Since English is the only language I have it may be a challenge but I am trying to locate as much as I can about the ancestral farm Fyrdegaard and any relatives still in the area. All I have is that Olav Fryde was living there in 1977.

Thank you for a wonderful site! My grandfather was John Samson Gulbraa and my grandmother was Elizabeth Ekse. I was astonished and thrilled to see a familiar photo of one of the Ekse bruk's. I've been told that my grandmother was a maid in the Gulbraa home, which is where she met my grandfather. My cousin Dawn Kirby has done a lot of research on the families, and we would all love to have any other information that's available about the Gulbraa/Ekse heritage. Thank you. Mary Fowler, Kent, WA, USA
Mye interessant stoff her.
I would be willing to write up some information about
Olina Fjellanger and her immigration to America and
having children.
(A little bit about 2 of her brothers and one sister
who also went to America.)
Do I sent it here, like this?

Today I was digging through some old family papers of my great grandfathers, Mense Severin Johannesen, and he traced his fathers father to Johannes Knutsen Trefall born in 1797 at the Trefall farm, and now I have found this wonderful family site, and im totally blown away. I have some history from this side that can maybe fill in some blanks so ill be excitedly waiting a responce...your long distant cousin Greg
This is a wonderful website. I had never seen any of these photos before and only had a vague idea of where my ancy ancestors came from. My great-grandmother was Brita Ekse and my great-grandfather was Torkel Gullbra. I would love any information you would have on the Gullbra and Ekse farms.
Hi again Kaare,
I haven't been out here for a while and thought I'd see if there was anything new. Your site looks very nice! Thanks for all your hard work at keeping the family history!

Hei!

hello! i enjoyed this website. i'm especially interested in eksingdahl because my family, the ekse family emigrated from there. my great grandfather, jacob ekse was sent in the late 1800s by the hauge synod to study and serve lutheran pioneers in the dakota territory. he traveled by buggy, snowshoes, and sleigh and established many congregations. ultimately he became president of the lutheran church in america---which became the ELC synod in later years.
our family records in norway go back to the 1300s and it was always said that eksingdahl was named for the ekse family. i have no idea if that's true. i'm 4th generation american but still am 100% of norwegian extraction. other family members came from voss, sogn, stavanger and trondheim early in the very early 1900s and late 1800s.

What a fascinating site. So many familiar names and places. My maternal Great-Grandparents were Lars and Anna Ekse, when reading down to the "in Norwegian only" section, the Big Canoe Settlement is where my mother's family settled. The Fadness Folkedahl Sanderson lineage are all related. Family areas in Norway are Berdal, Ekse, Voss, Sognefjord area, Hamre, Hove; and keep learning of more. It is so exciting to read other Guestbook entries and see familiar family names. My mother, Ellen Sanderson Simonson, grew up in Decorah, Iowa. She did much geneology research and I've begun to continue her work. Thank you all.

Great website. Thank you for taking the time to put it together. My great grandmother, Anna Nesheim Simonson is from Nesheim farm. My great grandfather (or maybe it was his father) is from Ekse. His American name was Mattias Exxe Simonson (he spelled Ekse differently). I have been to the Eksingadalen valley on two occasions. It is a beautiful valley. We have relatives from Norway arriving tomorrow to visit us here in Northern California in the USA. Their names are Rune and Annette Oksendahl. They have two children, Julie and Gard. Rune's mother Kjellaug is the daughter of Lars Nesheim. Lars and my great grandmother Anna Nesheim are brother and sister (I hope I got that correct!) How far is Nesheim from Trefall?

Hello again. I've been doing a lot of research on my Ekse/Trefall, Gulbraa heritage.
I noticed you have info on the Trefall branch, Bruk #2, regarding Askjell Knutson Trefall, the eldest son of Knut Jakobson Trefall, and I am a descendant of his brother, Helge.
Knut Jakobson Trefall was my great-great-great grandfather through his son, Helge, born 1846; son of Knut and his 2nd wife, Elisabeth Askjelsdatter Aarhus.
Helge married Marie Gullaksdatter Nedre, born 1857. they were married in Voss on 15 Jun 1880.
One of their daughters was my great-grandmother, Elisabeth Helgesdatter Ekse, born 1885. She married John Samson Gulbraa in 1908, in South Dakota, USA. She emigrated in 1906, and he in 1902. They lived in North Dakota for a while, and also spent several years in Irma, Alberta, Canada. They had 5 children, and eventually settled in Olympia, Washington. Elizabeth died in 1972 at the age of 87 years, and John died in 1974 at the age of 91 years.
Their last living daughter, Ragnhild, lives in California, USA.
I have lots of information and pictures on this branch of the family if anybody is interested. I live in Olympia, Washington, USA.
Again, thank you for making this wonderful, informative website!

I recently started a family tree on ancestry.com and was so excited to find this site! I love looking at the pictures of the vicinity where my great-grandparents grew up.
Would love to connect with any relatives of my great-grandparents Helge Knudson Ekse (Trefall), born 1886, and Marie Gullaksdatter Nedre, born 1857 ~ on my grandmother's side. Samson Josefson Gulbraa, born 1851, and Britha (Brita) Jonsdatter Guldbraa, born 1852 ~on my grandfather's side.
I have a family tree dating back to about 1600 that somebody did for my Ekse branch, but have very little on my great-grandfather Gulbraa's side. Any help would be much appreciated. I found birth/baptism records for both my g-grandparents, but it's difficult when you don't know know the Parish.
Have traced my distant relationship to Kari Nilsdatter Trefall, and really enjoyed reading her story on this website.
Thank you SO much for doing this! Wish I could read Norwegian!

Greetings! I descend from people from the Lavik, Vetleford, and Flatekval farms, among others in the valley. My g-g-grandfather, Anders Simonson Flatekval came to the Meland and Ovstedal farms before leaving for America - so my mother's family name was Ofstedahl. I have done lots of research on the American side of the Laviks and Ofstedahls and visited Eksingedalen in 1997. I have a few photos of people from Norway that were brought over by/or sent to the emigrants - and I have no names to go with them. If there's anyone interested in those farms, I would happily exchange information. Thanks for doing this page, it is a wonderful resource.

I have a correction to my entry. Gulleik was taken to the insame asylum in October of 1887 (not 1876). Linda Main, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA.
Hello!
It appears we are distantly related. I am descended from Ingeborg Jonsdtr Trefall and Gulleik Johannesen Bergo. One of their daughters (Julia Johnson) was my grandmother. In 1878, Ingeborg and Gulleik moved to Adams Township in Grant County, South Dakota where they Homesteaded on 160 acres. Ingeborg died October 13, 1920. We have little information on Gulleik. He was taken to the South Dakota insane asylum in 1876. We don't have any information on him after that.
I have a public tree on Ancestry.com. The name of my tree is Francis Willys Main Family Tree (named in honor of my father).
I just came across your website today. I look forward to viewing it in detail and learning more about my ancestors.

Addition to Andrew Oksendahl history: Wife was Sofia Gustafson. As a child
of Selma Constance Oksendahl who grew up on the farm near Rugby, N.D., I was allowed to vacation on the farm. I fed the chickens, watched grandmother churn butter, visited their garen. Younger son, Ferdinand and wife Nora took over the homesteaded farm. Great picnics on July 4 brought relatives together.

Hello and many thanks Kaare! I really enjoyed your site. I was beginning to think that I would never find out where my ancestors lived in Norway. My great grandfather's name was Jacob Jacobsen Nese and grandmother's was Anna Knudsdatter Ladvik. And yes, they were from this valley. Am I correct in assuming that your pictures of Nesestoel are in the Nese farm area? Thanks
takk for fine sider !

Wonderful web site, thank you, really enjoyed seeing the beautiful pictures and learning about distant relatives!
Fun to see this website and learn some of the family history. I live in the Pacific Northwest, in Washington State, US.

Seinare bygde far, Ingvald, hytte. Far sa alltid at Eksingedalen var den vakraste dalen i landet.
Looking for relatives of Rasmus and Kari Oksendal - left Norway and moved to Fargo North Dakota I think somewhere between 1912-1920
Frank

My brother John Hamilton just sent your guest book address. I live in the Seattle, Washington area (Northwest U.S.A) I go by Jaye but my given name was Judy or Judith, grandpa Oksendaht always pronounces it Yudy.
Growing up I thought I was 100% Norwegian. Mother spoke some Norwegian and baked the Norwegian cookies, christmas bread and lefse. We had and still do to this day have Swedish meatballs every Christmas, they are a family favorite. Mom always served swedish meatballs and lutefisk. My husband teases me that he won't eat anything that turns the silverware black.

I am the grandson of Andrew Oksendahl. He was a pioneer and settled in Rugby, North Dakota in the 1880's.
I believe he is the older half brother of Nels Oksendahl who settled in Montana. I recall my grandfather brought over most of his family from Norway. If this is the same Nels, he has a daughter named Wilma.
(Originally added by John at Wed Sep 20 01:37:42 2006, but rejected by my guestbook-software because of the missing "Code" field.)
Som additions done by Kaare:
- From an email sendt to John:
As you surely already have done, you can read about your grandfather Andrew (Andreas in Norwegian), and about his younger half brother Nels (Nils in Norwegian), on the pages found at
emigration from Yksendal.
I hope I can add your "denied" guestbook enty to my guestbook.
- From John's answer: Yes, this Andrew Oksendahl, is my grandfather. I am the son of Selma Oksendahl, Andrew's daughter. I recognize all of the pictures of the North Dakota farm that are in your web site.
I will forward this to my siblings James Hamilton, Janice Gaston, Joan Clow and Judy Harrington. They will enjoy your web site.
You may include my e-mails in your guest book

I was wondering if Traefald and Trefall could be related.
Hi, I am a granddaughter of Ingeborg (Lindbo) Olson who lived in northern MN. Marna Dahl was my first cousin. My husband, Clarence, is a retired engineer. We and our three married children also live in Billings. I'd like to begin updating our Slektsbok which your father and Marna worked on. We'd enjoy hearing from you. Distant cousin, Yvonne

Kjempebra sider. Håper å ta turen opp dit i sommer.

I've visited this region that my grandfather (Nels H Oksendahl) came from with my wife (Elaine) and my youngest son (Jonathan Eric Oksendahl) in 2003. Absolutely beautiful part of the world.
We live in Port Orchard, Washington and travel each day by ferry to work in Seattle, Washington (I work at Boeing, my wife is a hospital adminstrator and our youngest son attends grade school). Hans Andrew Oksendahl is our oldest son who lives in West Seattle; a daughter, Prairie Windsong Oksendahl, lives in Olympia, Washington; and oldest daughter, Heidi Lemuria Beyer, lives in Rhode Island and just gave birth to the next generation, Hannah Lemuria Beyer born Dec. 4th 2005.
My youngest brother, Peter Oksendahl, commutes on the ferry with as well, he and his wife Nola and daughter Ariel live close by us in Port Orchard. His oldest daughter Lorelei, husband Larry Newman and son Trace live in Seattle.

Greetins from Kenosha Wisconsin. My grand aunt (Guri Oksendahl 1858 - 1899)was Lars Knutsson Trefald's wife. Very nice web page. I'll be checking it from time to time.
Ei veldig fin side du har laga. Utruleg flotte bilde.
I live in Spokane, Washington, USA. Just received a message from a relative (Gary Wendheim), who forwarded pictures. My Norwegian family name is Oksendal.
Hei!
Hello from Bend, Oregon USA. We love your page and hope to see many more pictures. Gary is a grandson of Kari Nilsen Trefall born Aug. 3 1893, she married Rasmus Oksendal in 1913 and they came to America to live. Both are passed away now but many grand children and great grand children now live in many states. I was at Trefall in Sept. 2003 and met the lady living at bruk #1. I could not talk to her but a Norwegian 'cousin' visited with her. If we get back to Norway maybe we can try your hiking trails through the pastures. Beautiful pictues. Karen Windheim
